The introduction of copper to the human race

Copper is believed to be discovered by man over 10,000 years ago. It is considered to be one of the first metals to be unearthed by humans. The main reason for the early discovery and use of copper is that it occurs in a relatively pure form as compared to other metals.

The various copper decorative items and tools unearthed during excavations, dates back to as early as 9,000 BC. The archeological evidence suggests that the early Mesopotamians were the first ones who fully harnessed the ability to extract copper and use for various purposes.

Due to the lack of modern metallurgy knowledge, early societies such as Egyptians, Mesopotamians and Native Americans used copper basically for its aesthetic appeal. They used it mainly for making jewelry just like silver and gold and decorative items.

Researchers suggest that the use of copper became regular for a period which was named the "copper age". The use of copper to sterilize drinking water started around 2600-2200 B.C. and since then has been used for storing and drinking water.
